Periodontal Care

According to the American Academy of Periodontology, half of adults over 30 have periodontitis, an advanced form of periodontal disease. You might not even realize you have it, which means you aren’t getting any treatment for it.

Getting treatment is necessary because gum disease can contribute to diabetes and heart disease – even cancer. At the Ricard Family Dentistry offices in Fort Pierce and Port St. Lucie, Drs. Arturo and Maria Ricard will help you keep your gums healthy, as well as treat them if needed.

Keeping Your Gums Healthy

At Ricard Family Dentistry, we can help protect you from:

  • Swollen and bleeding gums
  • Bad breath
  • Tooth loss
  • Receding gums

Brushing your teeth is one thing, but do you also take care of your gums? Keeping your gums healthy is an important part of dental hygiene. They help protect your teeth from decay and disease, while also being susceptible to infection.

SOME OPTIONS FOR TREATING GUM DISEASE

If you do have gum disease, Ricard Family Dentistry has a couple solutions for you.

  • Scaling and Root Planing – This treatment is noninvasive and does not require any surgery. Our dentists use ultrasonic scalers and hand tools to remove plaque and bacteria that has built up underneath the gumline. We will then smooth the tooth roots to help guard against reinfection.
  • Osseous Surgery – If scaling and root planing is not a viable option, surgery may be needed. Along with smoothing the tooth roots, we will clean the wide periodontal pockets, then trim and reposition them. After surgery, you should come in for maintenance every three to four months.

Whichever treatment is best suited for you will allow your gums to return to a healthy state.
