“As long as my teeth are fine, I don’t need to worry about my gums, right?” You’ve probably uttered these words at some point and wondered why your Port St. Lucie dentist recommends you treat gum disease.

We’ve asked patients why they don’t worry, and the usual answers we get are, “they don’t hurt that much” or “the bleeding is only minimal.” Did you know that if gum disease is left untreated, it can lead to significant health problems? Don’t take your gum health for granted.

Should You Worry About Gum Disease?

What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease, also known as periodontitis, is a gum infection that destroys your gum tissues. If the problem is left untreated, it will eventually cause your teeth to loosen and damage the jawbone supporting your teeth.

It’s usually due to poor oral hygiene. If you fail to establish an oral care routine, there’s a very high chance you’ll experience gum disease. Some of the symptoms of gum disease include bright red gums, gums that bleed easily, puffy gums, spitting out blood after flossing or brushing, bad breath, pus between your gums and teeth, and pain when you chew.

Is Gum Disease Preventable?

The good news is that gum disease is completely preventable, and when caught early, it can still be reversed. Three things keep gum disease at bay. One, you should brush your teeth diligently twice a day for two minutes.

Secondly, don’t forget to floss before bedtime, ensuring that you’re using the proper technique. Lastly, make sure you visit your dentist once every six months for an oral exam and professional teeth cleaning.
