How Long Do Braces Cause Discomfort?

Braces and Pain

During your consultation, your orthodontist will tell you to expect minor discomfort during the first few days of wearing braces. The discomfort is normal and it will subside as your mouth gets used to the device. It’s very rare for patients to complain of severe pain.

Discomfort can be due to the pressure placed on your teeth as they move toward alignment. Another source of pain is the rough brackets and wires that rub against the insides of your cheeks.

Dealing with Braces Pain

Although your mouth is pretty resilient and can easily adjust, there are a few things you can do to minimize the discomfort. For the rough brackets and wires, you may place an orthodontic wax and roll it into a tiny ball and press it over the bracket that’s causing the discomfort.

If the pain is due to your newly adjusted braces, you can take over-the-counter painkillers to relieve the discomfort.
